Crystal Dynamics has said that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is connected to its Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy in terms of both gameplay and narrative.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest 2026, game director Raul Siqueira and experience director Jeff Adams discussed what the studio is calling a "reimagining" of the original 1996 game.
While Legacy of Atlantis may look different, featuring a new actress for Lara Croft in Alix Wilton Regan, and even though the story was released 30 years ago, Siqueira confirmed that the Survivor trilogy is linked to the upcoming game.
"Absolutely," Siqueira replied when asked if they're connected, "but I think [because] we've worked on the modern trilogy, it helps that a lot of people working on this game actually did the previous one.
"Jeff [Adams] has a really nice way of saying it, that it kind of connects the two of them together, that Survivor was Lara's past, right?"
Siqueira said the studio planned Legacy of Atlantis "as Lara's future," where she is in "her prime" and has learned lessons from the events of the Survivor trilogy.
"Everything that you saw in the Survivor trilogy helped shape who she is," he explained. "When she was just starting, she was beginning her career; she didn't have the confidence to pull acrobatics or anything like that. Lara, in the future, does — so when you go from a narrative perspective, there's a lot that we pull from [the Survivor trilogy], but even on the gameplay side of things: you probably saw that the T-Rex has a lot of flavor from [those] high-intensity cinematic moments [in the Survivor trilogy].
"I think that there is quite a bit that we go from jumping from the Survivor trilogy in terms of gameplay, but also from the narrative side of it."
Adams added that they've been asked a similar question before, and if Survivor "counts" within the canon story Crystal Dynamics is telling. He reiterated that "Survivor is absolutely Lara's past, but she is not beholden to that now."
"The Lara that you find in Legacy of Atlantis is one who's unfettered by the past, I guess."
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches on February 27, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
